Rare January Hurricane Strengthens In Atlantic

Packing 85-mph winds in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, that Hurricane Alex even exists is historic, according to multiple media outlets.

The storm formed south of the Azores islands early Thursday morning and by the afternoon had strengthened, according to CNN.com.

It is the first named storm of 2016, the first named January storm to form in the Atlantic since 1978 and the first January-born hurricane since 1938, according to CNN.com.

Alex is a fast-moving storm and is expected to strike the Azores, bringing at many as 7 inches of rain to the islands, which are part of Portugal, according to CNN.com.
