Proposed Secession Plan Puts Westchester In 'New' New York State

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- An advocacy group is calling for secession legislation that would break up New York as we know it into two separate states, with Westchester and Rockland counties and points south remaining "New York" and Putnam and Dutchess counties and points north making up "New Amsterdam."

Newamsterdamny.org and its organizers suggest a split is necessary due to the dichotomy that exists between the suburban/rural culture that exists throughout most of the state versus the heavily urbanized culture that exists in the downstate population centers like New York City and the surrounding areas.

Activists are calling on residents to petition local and state legislators in the hopes to get a proposal introduced by 2016.
