WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Former Parking Department and Recreation and Parks Department Commissioner Albert Moroni, 60, got into an accident with a city-owned car 13 days before he resigned.
Moroni submitted an accident report detailing his Oct. 12 accident this past Monday, the day before he stepped down.
The New City residents report describes the accident, saying, that a tractor trailer made too sharp of a left turn, forcing the citys 2005 Ford Escape to jump the curb onto the sidewalk in Valley Cottage, New York. Moroni indicated in written reports that he didn't believe the incident was his fault, and wrote that he had to drive onto the sidewalk to avoid being hit.
The paperwork indicates police did not get involved after Moroni was stranded on the side of Kings High Way at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Oct. 12. No information about the tractor or its driver was included in the report.
Moroni, who earned a salary of $167,063, said he decided to resign after 30 years with the city because of his prostate cancer, not the crash, according to published reports. However, Common Council members have indicated that Moroni lost the trust of City Hall before he stepped down.
Common Council member David Buchwald said, The commissioner lost the confidence of the council and, in particular, of the mayor, and all commissioners serve at the pleasure of the council. Moroni resigned, so that makes it the end of the story as far as the city is concerned.
Moroni has not responded to requests for comment. Although his resignation does not go into effect until Nov. 30, an email from Karen Pasquale indicates he will no longer be working from his city office. Deputy Commissioner John Larson will be managing the Parking Department and Francine Croughan will lead the Recreation and Parks Department until further notice.
