Inmates Say They Were Brutally Interrogated After Killers' Escape

DANNEMORA, N.Y. -- An investigation by The New York Times has found that fellow inmates faced beatings after convicted killers Richard Matt and David Sweat escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in early June.

The Times used letters, prison interviews and inmate testimonies that combined to paint a picture of a series of abuses which included but were not limited to physical beatings and choking, according to The New York Times.

These inmates, who had earned residence on what was called the "honor block" with good behavior, were also subjected to a series of harsh rules implemented by the State Department of Corrections and Community Supervisions. Others were also subjected to transfers to other prisons, according to The New York Times.

Inmates were placed in solitary confinement, and stripped of privileges they had earned over many years though no prisoners have yet been linked to Mr. Matt’s and Mr. Sweat’s escape.
