Below is a sampling of neighbors who are in need.
Cynthia, 19, had her hopes and dreams for the future put on hold when her mother died this past summer. Cynthia took a full-time job in order to keep her three younger siblings together. Providing enough food for herself and her siblings was difficult, but now food is being provided for them by the Hillside Food Outreach.
Mike is married and the father of three small children. He was working hard to provide for his family until he was diagnosed with a severe case of diabetes, which left him both blind and on dialysis. If his wife were to work outside of the home, childcare expenses would take up her entire salary, so they are trying to get by on disability payments. Feeding the family, something Mike always took for granted, became a constant struggle, forcing him to turn to the Hillside Food Outreach.
Frank, a veteran injured in the line of duty who is now confined to a wheelchair, must live on only his disability income, which does not allow him to cover all of his expenses. He now relies on the Hillside Food Outreach to bring him supplemental food each month.
Martha is a senior who lives on social security income. Because the cost of living is constantly on the rise, social security does not provide enough income for her to live on, which means Martha often faced the end of the month with empty cupboards and an empty stomach -- at least until the Hillside Food Outreach stepped in to help.
Tom is another senior driven to desperate lengths by hunger. At one point, he stole food from a local supermarket just to eat. The Hillside Food Outreach now provides him aid.
Unfortunately, there are countless others with similarly heartbreaking situations who are visited monthly by the Hillside Food Outreach volunteers.
While the organization is doing great things, they need help. Anyone interested in signing up for a monthly donation of any amount is urged to Hillside's Adopt a Family Program.
