The scorching heat brought a drought to Renaissance Plazas typically bustling crowd Wednesday.
However, temperatures peaking at 91 degrees didnt stop warm weather fanatics including Lornette Lawrence, 38, and her daughter Alayia Picart, 7, from relaxing by the water fountain in downtown White Plains.
Were sitting by the water enjoying the breeze, its beautiful, said Lawrence, a White Plains resident studying health services management at Berkeley College. I like the heat. I just lay in my bed and sweat, and lose a couple of pounds. But my kids run the A/C all day long.
The number of people lounging near the fountain on Main Street was definitely diminished, according to Lawrence.
At 4 p.m. the 48,000-gallon fountain pond had attracted only 15 attendees. Lawrence guessed more people would stop by after the sun set.
However, the forecast suggests not much may change Thursday. White Plains reached a high of 91 degrees Wednesday and may get up to 96 degrees Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
Alayia, a second grader at George Washington Elementary School, came armed with a blue raspberry slushy. Her mother said they often go to watch the evening water shows, where jets propel water as high as 60 feet in the air.
Shes always telling me, 'the water fountain is on, the water fountain is on, its on, said Lawrence.
The aquatic display is popular with other White Plains kids, including Jasnine Saleador, 9, and her sister Cindy Saleador, 2, who visited Renaissance Plaza with their aunt Rosana Acevedo.
We do enjoy it, Acevedo said of the weather. Therere less people out because its so hot. But we brought water and were right by the fountain.
Jasnine, who later dipped her arms into the fountain, said now that its warm, shes anxious to visit Playland.
