Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire.

The festival of lights begins on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar. Being based on the Hebrew calendar is what allows the holiday to begin so late this year and to overlap with both Christmas and New Year's Day.
