That amount of positive response put New York in the middle of the pack in all 50 states surveyed.

Nine percent of responders went even further, saying New York is the absolute best state in the country. Twelve percent of responders said that New York is actually the worst state in the U.S.

Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted June-December 2013, with a random sample of approximately 600 adults per state, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states, according to Gallup.

Montana and Alaska residents responded the most positively to their state, with 77 percent of adults polled in each state saying that their state is the best or among the best in the country to live in.

Texas had the highest percentage of responders who think that their state is the absolute best state to live in with 68-percent loving the Lone Star State.

Rhode Island had the lowest amount of positive responders, with only 18 percent of residents saying that the state is the best or among the best in the U.S.

Residents of Western and Midwestern states generally responded more positively about their states as places to live. With the exception of the New England states of New Hampshire and Vermont, all of the top 10 rated states are west of the Mississippi River.
