The derailment occurred at 7:20 a.m. Pictures from the scene showed cars on their sides and at least one precariously close to the water. Photos also showed multiple cars derailed. There were conflicting reports about how many train cars had derailed, but Gov Andrew Cuomo reported seven cars were off the tracks.
Metro-North reported that about 100 passengers were on board.
The FDNY believes all victims have been taken from the scene. JFK High School at 99 Terrace View Avenue in the Bronx has been set up as a victim assistance center. People can call 311, 718-817-7444 or 212-639-9675 for information on missing persons.
All Hudson Line train service was suspended between Tarrytown and Grand Central Terminal as a result of the derailment.
Bus service was being provided between White Plains and Tarrytown station for customers wishing to travel in and out of Grand Central. Shuttle bus service will commence at about 11 a.m. Customers at stations between Irvington and Yankees-East 153rd Street station were urged to use the Harlem Line, New York City Transit Subway and/or bus service. Hudson Line tickets will be cross-honored for these services.
The Metro-North website said service was temporarily suspended between Croton Harmon and Grand Central. Service on the New Haven and Harlem Lines was not affected.
The derailed train was headed south from Poughkeepsie, according to reports.
