It also signals the upcoming closing of Hangar 17 at Kennedy International Airport that had kept safe at least 2,500 items that served as reminders of loss and survival from that day, the Times says.
A piece of a 360-foot antenna that used to sit atop the World Trade Center, along with an elevator motor and a concrete structure from a parking garage, were loaded onto a truck to be given to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation for display. Only a few items remain outside of Hangar 17 now that the inside has been cleaned out, the Times says.
Those who gathered to mark the occasion say the pieces of history represent the memory of those lost in the attacks as well as the thousands of survivors. Most all of the other items have already been shipped out to museums, fire stations or other exhibits, the Times reports.
