Farms Are Hit Hard As Bird Flu Affects Millions of Hens

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Outbreaks of avian flu are increasing in the United States, with as many as 33 million chickens, turkeys and ducks potentially affected, according to a report in The New York Times.

American farmers have not previously had to cope with an outbreak this extensive, though farmers in other parts of the world have been hit with such epidemics, the report said.

On Thursday, South Dakota reported a possible outbreak on a farm with 1.3 million chickens, the Times reported.
