The New York Times recently collected 10 of the biggest newcomers which seem to have staying power. Here are a few:

cat cafe (n.) -- The concept comes from Asia, where pets aren't allowed in certain residential buildings, the Times explains. These coffee houses also have kitties you can hang out with in an adjoining space, and adoption of them is usually a dual goal.

New York City's cat cafes include Meow Parlour and Koneko.

hangry (adj.) -- This is being so hungry that you're angry or cranky. Sure, you could say "low blood sugar," but why?

wine o'clock or beer o'clock (n.) -- The time of day that it's time to start drinking, in someone's own judgment.

zarf (n.) -- This is the cardboard collar that goes 'round a paper coffee cup, to muffle the heat

Boringly called a cup sleeve, zarf "is an old Arabic word, recently revived, for an ornamental holder for a coffee cup with no handle," according to the Times.
