WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. The We Stand in Solidarity Dinner scheduled for Saturday to honor the life of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. has been postponed.
The event is tentatively rescheduled for December, and tickets already bought will be honored then, said Julie Davis Carran, communications coordinator for the Network for Police Accountability and co-chair of the Westchester Martin Luther King Jr. Institute for Nonviolence.
The dinner will also honor the lives of others who members of the Network for Police Accountability believe died as a result of police misconduct. It will be held at the Knights of Columbus, 139 N. Broadway. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased online.
There will be several speakers, as well as a special keynote speaker, yet to be announced. The families of DJ Henry and Ramarley Graham will also be in attendance.
Chamberlain, 68, was shot by Officer Anthony Carelli after police responded to a medical alert from Life Aid that Chamberlain accidentally triggered around 5:30 a.m. Nov. 19, 2011. During an hourlong standoff at his apartment, Chamberlain refused to open his door to allow police to verify his condition.
Chamberlain family lawyers have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the City of White Plains, its Public Safety Department and Housing Authority, and are pursuing criminal charges against the officers involved through the U.S. attorney's office.
"When it comes to police misconduct, brutality and criminality, 'We Stand in Solidarity' and demand accountability," Carran said.
The next meeting of the Network for Police Accountability is scheduled for Sept. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mount Hope AME Zion Church, 65 Lake St.
