The vote was 2,028 to 172 opposing the contract, CSEA Unit 2200 President Kwabena Manu told lohud.com
In the proposal, wages over eight years would increase by 8.5 percent, and members of the union would pay a portion of their health insurance premiums, reported the newspaper.
"It says our members are not happy and aren’t going to take any crap," Manu told lohud.com "I've never seen a vote like this in all my years with the union."
Astorino spokesman Ned McCormack told lohud:com that employees of the union paying from 6 to 10 percent of premiums for their health insurance was "not unreasonable."
But Manu told Daily Voice it's not whether employees have to contribute toward their health insurance but how much.
"The union has never refused to pay towards health care benefits.The employees just want a cap on the amount they pay," he said.
Unit 2200 has 3,000 members and 2,200 voted, according to Manu.
