Consumer Reports Releases Top Cars Of 2016 List

It's something automakers wait for each year -- the Consumer Reports list of Top Cars for the year. And this year, when it comes to the top for reliability and driving qualities, foreign cars remain on top, according to Consumer Reports.

In order of the best, Audi, Subaru and Lexus were the top three brands overall, the magazine said in its annual listing. Fiat, Jeep and Mitsubishi had the three lowest scores on the organization's list. Lexus' refashioned RX claimed the luxury SUV spot, and Mazda's new MX-5 Miata grabbed the award for the best inexpensive sports cars.

Only one Detroit car made it in the Top 10, and that was Buick; but when you whittle down the list, other American cars make an appearance with the Chevrolet Impala ranked as the top large car, and the Ford F-150 as the top pickup, Consumer Reports reported.

Other tops picks included the Honda Fit as best small car and the Subaru Forester as the best small SUV, said Consumer Reports.

Fiat and Chrysler automobiles came in dead last, named the worst overall brand.

Consumer Reports said they use the following criteria to make their picks:

  • Performance: To qualify, each model must rank at or near the top of its class in our road-test score.
  • Reliability: Models must have an average or better predicted reliability rating based on problems reported by subscribers for the 740,000 vehicles in their 2015 auto survey.
  • Owner satisfaction: They surveyed their subscribers about their happiness level regarding the 230,000 vehicles in their garages. Would they buy their car again?
  • Safety: Top Picks must perform effectively in crash or rollover tests conducted by the government and insurance industry (if tested).
