Con Ed Installs New Gas Pipes in White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Drivers were directed to one lane on Maple Avenue between Waller and Mamaroneck Avenues Tuesday as Con Edison installed new gas pipes in White Plains. Con Edison has been putting in new gas lines to update the system in several locations around the city since March 22. The city plans to repave many of those roads, prompting Con Edison to get their work done now so it doesn't tear up newly paved roads, one worker said. Persico, based in Mt. Vernon, has been contracted to excavate the areas, which include the length of Maple Avenue, Mamaroneck Avenue between Quarropas Street and Bloomingdale Road, along with several others. Crew members on the site Tuesday said they will continue work along Maple Avenue to the west of Mamaroneck Avenue Wednesday, and expect to complete the installation of pipes city-wide by the end of this week. At that point, they will integrate the new equipment into the system at five "tie-in" points. Throughout the process, one crew member said, they have to keep at least one lane open to traffic Tuesday, police officers helped conduct traffic on Maple Avenue, which they said was more congested than any of the other eight streets Con Edison has worked on so far. Those other streets include: • Cromwell Place between W Post Road and Maple Avenue • Longview Avenue between Fisher Court and W Post Road • S. Lexington between Water Street and Hamilton Avenue • S. Lexington between Martine Avenue and Quorropas Avenue • Martine Avenue between S. Lexington Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard • Fisher Avenue between Orawaupum Street to S. Lexington Avenue • Water Street between S. Lexington Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard • S. Kensico Avenue between Lake Street and Oakley Avenue (Stop & Shop entrance)
