White Plains Youth Bureau Honors Art Monk At 45th Annual Gala

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The White Plains Youth Bureau’s 45th Anniversary Gala -- Raising Today's Youth to be Tomorrow's Leaders -- will be held on Thursday from 6 to 10 p.m. at the the Crowne Plaza Hotel in White Plains.

The event -- which is presented by the Friends of the White Plains Youth Bureau will include a cocktail reception, dinner and a silent auction.

Erica Hill, NBC news journalist and co-anchor of the weekend edition of "TODAY," will serve as mistress of ceremonies, and special gala honoree will be the legendary Art Monk, a White Plains High School graduate and Pro Football Hall of Famer.

Monk played in the NFL for 16 years as a wide receiver. He won three Super Bowl titles and went to the Pro Bowl three times during his 14 years with the Washington Redskins. When he retired in 1995, he had a then-league record 940 receptions.

The gala will also honor community members George Avenaut, Danny Bernstein and Madge Anderson, and business leaders Berkeley College, TD Bank, White Plains Hospital and Bunge Limited.

In addition, the gala will showcase and celebrate the extraordinary work of the Youth Bureau over the last 45 years. Starting as a small coffeehouse in 1970, the Youth Bureau has developed into an effective, respected force in the city of White Plains and New York State.

The Youth Bureau works with 2,000 youth daily, 6,500 youth annually and offers 50 programs, including after-school, employment, leadership, counseling, community building, substance-abuse prevention and a variety of youth development programs that prepare youth for academic and personal success.

The White Plains Youth Bureau is the largest direct-service provider out of the 105 youth bureaus in New York State, and its programs are rated as Best Practice Programs (evidence-based programs) and have demonstrated effectiveness based on research.
