WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - If you ask Mary Reinthaler how long its been since she started lending services to the Piggy Bank, a used-clothing store whose proceeds benefit White Plains Hospital, she takes a minute to reflect on the luncheons, past presidents and volunteers who have come and gone over the years.
I started around 25 years ago, said the White Plains Hospital Auxiliary Board representative. Its not something you could do temporarily because you have to get to know the volunteers here.
The shop is located at 261 Central Ave. in Hartsdale and sells donated clothing, shoes and coats for mostly women and children. The volunteers also take regular trips to New York City to buy new jewelry for their customers, which Reinthaler says is a mark of their dedication to the Piggy Banks cause.
The volunteers just love the place and they keep it going, she added. They know the merchandise and the customers.
As for Reinthalers role at the Piggy Bank, she says one of her jobs is to assess the need for new supplies as well as produce a financial report of earnings after each month. If some items are not sold, Reinthaler and her team donate them to the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.
The White Plains resident says there are a lot of rewards that stem from logging hours for the Auxiliary Board and the Piggy Bank. Her team was recently able to help fund the addition of a childrens waiting room in White Plains Hospital's Emergency Room, for example, as well as purchase new equipment for its Neonatal department.
When you see the plaque that says Donated by the Auxiliary you realize youre a part of the group of people that helped put into it, added Reinthaler.
