WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Ty Matsushita is one of six White Plains students who will perform in the Westchester Glee Chorus' first-ever performance Friday at 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church of White Plains.
The church, at 430 North St., had wanted to create a youth chorus for years and began rehearsals in early February. Nine Westchester middle and high school students participated: White Plains High School seniors Matsushita, Matthew Silver, Zeeva Halpern and Alexandra Imbrosci, and juniors Maria Moore and Taylor Clay; Highlands Middle School student Megan Fay; Our Lady of Sorrow student Ella Chorniak; and North Salem High School student Kayla Milanes.
Friday, they will perform a joint concert with the Long Island Lutheran High School chorus, whose vocal coach and choral accompanist, Norine Castine, is also Trinity's music director.
"I know from working with the kids in Long Island how much of a difference this can make in a day," said Castine, a jazz pianist, conductor and BMI Jazz Composers Workshop member. "I've heard, 'I have a test today and I'm stressed out, can I pop in and sing my song?' The song they're singing in their car becomes a whole new thing when they're singing it with a whole chorus."
The chorus will sing a mix of 24 solos and small-group and four-part choral settings of pop music by artists such as Coldplay, Kelly Clarkston, Sara Bareilles, Adele, Carrie Underwood and Natasha Bedingfield.
A suggested donation of $5 for students and $10 for adults will go toward scholarships for the nine members of the Westchester Glee Chorus.
