Angela Sampugnaro and her husband were out celebrating their 53rd wedding anniversary when the rain struck White Plains Thursday night.
Its breaking the heat so thats a good thing, said Sampugnaro. We were so happy to see warm weather after this winter, but its been a little much.
Sampugnaro avoided getting soaked by huddling underneath a Buffalo Wild Wings awning on Mamaroneck Avenue. She caught Melissa Luna leaving work with an umbrella and hitched a sheltered escort to the Legal Sea Foods restaurant next door, where her anniversary celebration continued.
Sampugnaro said the downpour was welcome at her house in Greenburgh.
Itll help my garden, said Sampugnaro. Every day Ive been running out there trying to water it.
Many others hibernated from the storm in the nooks and awnings lining White Plains streets. Lauren Moran, a physician assistant student at Mercy College, took shelter in the Atlantic Bread Company on Main Street.
Right now I prefer the rain, said Moran, 24. If its going to be that humid it might as well rain.
Moran and her Mercy College classmate Kelsey Money watched drenched groups run along Main Street while debating how to get home without getting soaked.
I saw a guy with sunglasses on wiping them with his fingers like windshield-wipers, said Moran. Theres no point in having an umbrella its so windy.
There won't be much respite from the rain. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for White Plains until 10 p.m. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely until 3 a.m. The storms may bring large hail and damaging winds.
