WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Salvatore W. Trabakino, a retired land surveyor from White Plains, died on Oct. 17. He was 81.
Trabakino was born on Apr. 23, 1930 to Salvatore J. and Susan Trabakino. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he worked as a land surveyor for the Town of Greenburgh until his retirement.
Deeply concerned with the welfare of others, he was active in the Civil Service Employees Association. He even served as president of a local chapter of the local union.
Trabakino had a great passion for sports baseball and golf, in particular. His family goes so far as to joke that "there is DNA evidence to support that Yankee blood ran in his veins." He'd also often coach Catholic Youth Organization and little league games.
Nicknamed "Sal" and "Uncle Sonny," he also enjoyed storytelling, his stories monikered "Pop's parables" by his family. Sometimes, a smooth voice could be heard singing Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" while Trabakino drove with the windows down.
He is survived by his sons William Trabakino with wife Amy of Stamford, Conn., Mark Trabakino with wife Diane of Stormville, N.Y., David Trabakino of Tarrytown and Brian Trabakino of Fountain Hills, Ariz., his daughter Sharon Senno and husband Richard of Pawling, N.Y. and his sisters Claire Mastroianni and Lucy Robertson. He was predeceased by his wife Jane Kellett, his brothers Ralph, John and Alphonse and his sisters Phyllis, Grace, Joan and Gloria.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at McMahon, Lyon & Hartnett Funeral Home in White Plains. The funeral service is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m., also at the funeral home. Interment following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
