When the heat swept across White Plains Thursday many noticed a second sensation overcome them - the desire for ice cream.
Tiffany Flores, 17, gets ice cream frequently, however, she said the weather played a role in her decision to stop by the Haagen-Dazs on Mamaroneck Avenue Thursday.
"I hate it," Flores said of the weather.
The White Plains High School senior said her java chip ice cream helped her cool off and was "super good."
Flores and her friend Jessica Bedoya, 17, said most classrooms in the White Plains High School aren't air conditioned.
"It's horrible," said Bedoya. "It's just like eewww. You don't even want to be there."
Students weren't the only ones looking for a cool treat after sweating all day. West Harrison resident Amanda Passarella, 22, picked up a strawberry sorbet smoothie Thursday.
"It's just deathly hot," said Passarella. "Just holding [the smoothie] is so nice."
Haagen Dazs owner Ellen Wakeford said her shop was so busy they called an extra employee to come in Wednesday night. Normally Haagen Dazs has one person scheduled during the work week. However, Wakeford put two people on the schedule Thursday in anticipation of another heat-induced ice cream rush.
"Some people have even come in twice, once for lunch and once for dinner," said Wakeford, who acquired the Haagen Dazs this May. "Last night was really busy."
White Plains had a high of 97 degrees Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. Those looking for an excuse to indulge may want to hurry. Showers and thunderstorms are likely tonight and the temperature will dip down to at least 84 degrees Friday.
