WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Daniel F. Gallagher, of White Plains, died Jan. 25 after a long illness. A former investigator for the Westchester County District Attorney's office, he was 78.
Born Oct. 4, 1933 in Bronx, N.Y., Gallagher was raised in Carrigart, County Donegal, Ireland by his paternal grandparents. He returned to the U.S. in 1947 and settled in Larchmont. He became a member of the first graduating class of Archbishop Stepinac High School in 1952.
Gallagher began a career in law enforcement in 1958, joining the White Plains Police Department. In 1964, he became an investigator with the district attorney's office. Ten years later, he rose to the rank of senior investigator and then deputy chief investigator in 1990. He retired in 1992.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, T.C., his daughter Susanne of White Plains, his sons Michael (Shannon) of Yonkers and James (Deborah) of Bergenfield, N.J. and three grandchildren.
Gallagher is also survived by his brothers Michael J. of Newtown Square, Penn., Richard of the Bronx and Kevin of Ossining, his sisters Margaret Connors of Bronxville and Mary Merenda of White Plains, an aunt, uncle and many nieces and nephews. Gallagher was predeceased by his his parents Michael and Margaret, his brother John and a grandson.
Visiting hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at McMahon, Lyon & Hartnett Funeral Home in White Plains. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church with interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
