Flag Day dates back to 1889 when George Balch, a kindergarten teacher in New York City, planned appropriate ceremonies for the children of his school. The New York Board of Education later adopted the observation of Flag Day.

After decades of state and local celebrations, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777. June 14 did not officially become Flag Day on a National Level until 1949 when Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress.
