Mom and pop shops -- those small business run by husband and wives, families and groups of friends -- form the backbone of the American economy.

More than 27 million people created 70 percent of all new jobs in recent years, and all were in the small business sector, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The SBA defines a small business as having 500 employees or less. An additional 3.6 million enterprises have even four or fewer workers.

According to Nonstop Celebrations, the benefits of small businesses are numerous,

  • Specialized customer service
  • Being serviced by family or friends
  • Personalized service
  • Beyond the call of service
  • Live phone operators
  • Specialized phone personnel
  • Knowledgable help
