The first printed recipe for a “Martinez” cocktail appeared in a bartending manual published in San Francisco in 1887, according to Punchbowl.

Bartender Julio Richelieu is said to have made the first martini in Martinez, Calif. in 1874, for a coal miner who wanted something special.

Julio Richelieu Day is celebrated in Martinez, Calif. on Sept. 6 and the city celebrates martini month.

The traditional recipe calls for a dash of bitters, 2 dashes maraschino liqueur, 1 pony (55ml) gin, 1 wine glass vermouth (15ml) and a slice of lemon.

A dirty martini is made with a splash of olive brine or olive juice and is garnished olives.

Aside from the iconic James Bond -- who preferred his shaken, not stirred -- there's a long list of famous martini drinkers.

Humphrey Bogart was a martini drinker, as was Jackie Gleason, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Clark Gable and W.C. Fields.
