Held on the closest school day to the birthday of Dr. Seuss, the initiative on reading created by the National Education Association aims to build a nation of readers.

Now in its 19th year, the program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships and reading resources.

Birthday parties for for Dr. Seuss, inviting guest readers into children's classrooms and reading-centered activities within libraries and throughout communities are among ways to mark the occasion whose motto, a Dr. Seuss quote, is: "You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child."
