The holiday was coined in 2011 by the Star Wars fanbase in honor of the book and film series. May 4 was chosen to spoof on the popular catchphrase "May the Force be with you."
National Star Wars Day celebrates the culture and fan following and the first organized celebration of Star Wars Day took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Toronto Underground Cinema. It included trivia, a costume contest with celebrity judges, tribute films, mash-ups and parodies.
George Lucas released the first Star Wars film on May 25, 1977.
