National Bike to Work Week 2016 kicks off May 16 and culminates with Bike to Work Day on May 20.

Hundreds of communities have started to join in as a whole, according to Bike League. Among the 51 largest U.S. cities, 43 hosted Bike to Work Day events in 2010.

The City of Denver reported the highest rate of participation with one out of every 28 adults participating in its 2010 Bike to Work event.

Many people who participate in a Bike to Work Day promotion as first-time commuters become regular bike commuters.

Portland has seen the biggest jump in bike commuting, followed by Washington, D.C. and San Francisco, according to Bike League.

According to the electronics company TrackR

  • New Yorkers save $19 billion over other cities because they rely less on cars.
  • By bicycling, people could save $28 billion annually in healthcare costs, missed work & school, and lost income potential from premature death.
  • If people biked one mile a day, the obesity rate would drop 2.16 percent in six years.
