National Pizza Day is held annually on Feb. 9 to celebrate a food so popular, the average American consumes 23 pounds of it every year, according to National Day Calendar.
The first pizzeria opened in Naples, Italy in 1738. Pizzerias came to the U.S. in 1895 when Gennaro Lombardi opened his shop in New York. Today, 17 percent of all restaurants in the U.S. are pizzerias.
