Cereal wasn't always packed with sugar and marshmallows. The meal came about in the 19th century as densely packed grain that had to be soaked to aid in digestion.
Cereal was viewed as a potential cure for gastrointestinal problems that came about from a mostly meat-based diet.
Sweetened cereals as we know them today began to surface in the late 1930s.
