What To Do Around White Plains This Week

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, a video game design workshop and a news conference where a police group will address its concerns about The Journal News’ map of gun license holders are a few of the events happening in White Plains this week.

Monday, Jan. 14

“My Brother Martin”: 4:30 to 5 p.m. A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a reading of Christine King Ferris's book "My Brother Martin: A Sister Remembers Growing Up With The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr," and other activities. This program is for school-age children grades kindergarten to sixth grade and their families. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

County Board of Legislators Meeting: 7 p.m. The Westchester County Board of Legislators will hold its regular meeting on the eighth floor of the Michaelian Building on 148 Martine Ave.

Board of Education Meeting: 7:30 p.m. The White Plains Board of Education will meet for its regular meeting at Education House on 5 Homeside Lane.

Tuesday, Jan. 15,

Police Group Address Journal News Gun License Map: 1 p.m. The Affiliated Police Association (APA) of Westchester County Inc. will hold a news conference to express its safety concerns stemming from The Journal News’ interactive map of the names and addresses of gun license holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. Westchester County Courthouse, 111 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

“Act It Out”: 4:30 – 5 p.m.  This three-session drama workshop includes theater games and script reading for grades three to six. A group performance will be held at the end of the last session on Jan. 29 at 5 p.m.

Planning Board Meeting: 7 p.m. The White Plains Planning Board will meet in the council chambers at City Hall on 255 Main St.

Wednesday, Jan. 16

MetroCard Van: 1:30 p.m. Buy your Metro Cards at the MetroCard Van, which will stop at the White Plains TransCenter between Water and New Street, across from the White Plains train station.

Have a Good Mental Health Day Every Day: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Scott Trefny from NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Westchester Division, will speak on developing a schedule to create a positive mental health day, including sleep, personal needs and recreation time. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Thursday, Jan. 17

Video Game Creation: 4 to 5:45 p.m. Learn the basic challenges of game and interactive design. Students will design and develop a video game about the dangers of distracted driving. Register online or contact the library at 914-422-6923. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.
