WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Westchester County will hold the second event of its new Safer Communities Initiative, a response to the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
The program at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Westchester County Center will address violence as a public health issue. It will include more than 300 civic and community leaders, educators and clergy, who will share best practices, identify areas for improvement and implement programs to address gaps in the system. The county Department of Health will work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for this event, to be held at the Westchester County Center.
“After Sandy Hook, we all asked what we could do to prevent this from happening again,” County Executive Robert Astorino said in a statement. “As county executive and a father of three young children, I want to be part of the solution. The Safer Communities initiative is a start.”
This forum builds on the School Safety Symposium held Feb. 27 at SUNY Purchase, which sought to help school districts better coordinate with law enforcement.
“What we hope to do at this forum is to increase awareness of existing resources, build relationships to improve communication and act as a unified team to increase our effectiveness,” Astorino said in the statement.
The free program is open to the public but registration is encouraged and may be done online.
