Westchester Hosting Senior Law Day Thursday

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Legal, financial and geriatric care experts will offer about a dozen free workshops on elder law topics at the 14th annual Senior Law Day on Thursday, Oct. 17 at the County Center in White Plains.

The event is from from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and also will include free 15-minute, one-on-one consultations for seniors and their families with elder law attorneys, certified financial planners and geriatric care managers.

“Senior Law Day is a marquee program,” said Westchester County Executive Robert  Astorino in a prepared statement. “I commend the professionals who volunteer their knowledge and time year after year to benefit county residents. Seniors should be informed about their rights and finances at all times to protect themselves and to plan for the years ahead.”

Workshop topics will include estate planning, wills versus trusts, preparing for the later years with or without long-term care insurance, the basics of financial planning and balancing love and marriage against estate, tax and Medicare concerns.

There also will be two workshops in Spanish.

Two workshops, "The Affordable Care Act: How the new health legislation affects your Medicare” and “Smart Seniors/Smart Investors: Don’t get scammed” will be new this year.

SESSION ONE: 9:45-10:45 a.m.

  • Estate Planning/Elder Law 101: Planning to preserve your assets.
  • Take Charge: Planning in advance for your health care.
  • Should I Use a Will or a Trust? Who’s afraid of probate? What to do when someone dies?
  • Smart Seniors/Smart Investors: Don’t get scammed.
  • Should I Say “I Do?”: Balancing love and marriage against estate, tax and long-term care considerations.
  • For Spanish-speaking seniors: Medicare Concerns.

SESSION TWO: 11 a.m. to noon

  • Nuts and Bolts of Financial Planning: Making your money last through retirement.
  • How Do I Pay for Long-Term Care?: Planning with and without long-term care insurance.
  • Should I Use a Will or a Trust?: Who’s afraid of probate? What to do when someone dies?
  • Avoid the 10 Greatest Gaffes in Estate Planning: Update on estate and income tax laws.
  • The Affordable Care Act: How the new health care legislation affects your Medicare.
  • For Spanish-speaking seniors: Smart Seniors/Smart Investors, Don’t get scammed. Also, wills, trusts and elder law.

SESSION THREE: 12:15-1:15 p.m.

  • Estate Planning/Elder Law 101: Planning to preserve your assets.
  • You Can Never Be Too Old or Too Careful: Tackling discrimination issues in the employment, housing and credit markets.
  • What are the Best and Most Affordable Housing Options as You Age?: Learn about the choices.
  • Take Charge: Planning in advance for your financial security; also, New York State’s power of attorney law and the use of guardianships.
