To show their supervisors – if they’re good ones – their appreciation, employees are showering them with cards, gift certificates and flowers.

According to Wikipedia, the day was registered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 1958 by Patricia Bays Haroski, a secretary for State Farm Insurance.

The Deerfield, Ill., woman chose Oct. 16 because it was her father’s birthday, according to Wikipedia.

Not only did Haroski want a way to show bosses the appreciation she thought they deserved, she thought it was a good way to improve relationships between managers and employees.

Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner finally backed Haroski’s registration in 1962 and officially proclaimed Oct. 16 as National Boss’s Day.

Hallmark, however, didn’t come up with a card until 1979.

Today, the day is observed in as faraway places as Australia, India and Ireland, according to Wikipedia.
