The holiday is celebrated annually on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in honor of the end of World War I.
The day was originally celebrated as Armistice Day, as it is in many other parts of the world. In the United States, however, the holiday eventually evolved into Veterans Day.
Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who lost their lives in the line of duty, Veterans Day celebrates the sacrifice made by all members of the military.
