In 2001, U.S restaurants served more than 8.2 billion burgers, while the estimated number of burgers eaten at home was an additional 15 billion, according to punchbowl.com.

Hamburgers originated in Hamburg, Germany, but eating them in a bun actually originated in America, most likely in Seymour, Wis. That city hosts an annual hamburger festival called Burger Fest. The festival is where the world's largest hamburger -- weighing in at 8,266 pounds -- was made in 2001, according to punchbowl.com.
