Small Business Saturday was launched in 2010 by American Express as a way to get people to support neighborhood downtowns. Now a national event recognized by Congress to take place each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, an estimated $14.3 billion is spent locally that day, according to American Express.
Now in its fifth year, it’s estimated more than 73 million shopped locally on Small Business Saturday and over 1,450 signed up to help rally their communities, American Express says on its website.
The day is embraced as a holiday tradition as much as Black Friday or Cyber Monday. American Express offers free materials to help small businesses promote the day.
