Brian Mattingly, chief executive officer of Welcomemat Services in Middletown, N.Y., talked to Daily Voice about how his New York franchise - the national company has locations in 22 states - has identified the city among his company's emerging markets in 2017.
Welcomemat Services franchises work to enhance the visibility of fellow small business owners. Brian and his wife, Michelle opened theirs in 2003.
He previously worked in software sales, and when traveling around for business, he watched how big box stores and large retailers determined through the use of technology and software where to build their locations, he said.
The companies need to determine the following:
What is the community vibe to shop local?
What is the popularity of the neighborhood?
What is the walkability of the neighborhood?
What is the sense of community belonging?
The company works with its clients to identify solutions.
Recently, in "America's Top 25 For Small Business Neighborhoods," the areas were identified in places around the country. Warwick in Orange County, landed 7th on the list.
"We work with small businesses all across the nation. Our premise is helping businesses who move to a community find all the things they need to know about it," he said.
"White Plains is not in our market but has been identified by the company as potential market that can be for us," Mattingly said.
"Westchester county has some great communities. It's a market we want to come into for so many great reasons," Mattingly said.
"It's a community centered place with various townships that have a great community feel and great parks. Also, its accessibility to a big city is good. It has all the things we look for in a community, based on our success in Orange County for there years"
As America's big box stores get even bigger, its more important than ever to recognize the power of small business ownership, according to Mattingly.
