A report in TheProducerNews.com said the official Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notices posted Monday by the state alerted more than 13,000 A&P workers across New York state of the potential for mass layoffs.
The report said nearly 13,000 employees in the New York City area could lose their jobs. Those numbers include 3,174 in the Hudson Valley, 5,191 in New York City and 4,732 in Long Island.
More than 9,000 employees at A&P stores in New Jersey have also been told they might lose their jobs by Thanksgiving.
The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in mid-July. It alerted the state departments of labor of through its Worker Adjustment & Retraining Notification filings, which requires businesses to provide all employees with notice 90 days prior to a plant closing, mass layoff, relocation or other covered reduction in work hours.
The advance notice allows workers more time to prepare for the layoff, seek new jobs and learn more about unemployment insurance and other programs designed to help them.
