iPhone 5 Flies Off The Shelf In Westchester Malls

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Jim Guinnee of White Plains will have to wait a week to pick up the iPhone 5 he ordered Friday afternoon from the AT&T store in the Galleria Mall. That's because the store sold out of Apple’s latest release within an hour of opening.

The iPhone 5 went on sale Friday, drawing crowds at area Apple and service provider stores. Although Guinnee didn’t walk out of the AT&T store with his new phone, he doesn’t mind waiting one more week after the long buildup to Friday’s release.

“I’m a big Apple fan. I like the ability to surf the net and do work,” said Guinnee, a marketing consultant for SymphonyIRI Group. He especially enjoys using apps to read The New York Times, Bloomberg and the Huffington Post on his phone.

While familiarizing himself with a display iPhone 5 at the AT&T store, Guinnee said he liked the screen’s higher resolution.

Apple is calling its latest evolution the thinnest and lightest smartphone ever, with a four-inch screen that fits five rows of icons. The screen is taller but not wider, so it can still be used easily with one hand. Made of glass and aluminum, the 5 is 7.6 millimeters thin and weighs 112 grams, making it 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than the previous iPhone, according to the Apple website.

It now has LTE, allowing faster downloads, and can actually be faster than the average WiFi connection at home, according to a video detailing new features on the iPhone 5.
