A 70-year-old man from the region could spend the rest of his life behind bars for raping a young child. Albany County resident Eric Edwards, of Watervliet, was sentenced to 25 years in prison in Albany County Court on Thursday, Aug. 17. It followed his jury conviction for first-degree rape in June 2023. According to prosecutors, Edwards raped a 10-year-old child at a home on 4th Avenue in Watervliet in February 2020. Sex Offenders Being Targeted By Phone Scammers, Police In Region Say
Authorities in the region are warning of phone scammers who are targeting a new class of victims: registered sex offenders. In a statement issued Friday, May 5, the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office said it was aware of a phone scam in which perpetrators claim to be affiliated with local law enforcement agencies. Serial Sex Offender Nabbed In Region After Assaulting Man With Autism, Police Say
A violent sex offender with a history of targeting vulnerable adults has been arrested in the region after allegedly assaulting a man with autism. In Albany County, Watervliet Police arrested 64-year-old Jamal Ali, of Watervliet, on multiple sex crimes following an alleged incident that occurred on Thursday, Aug. 4. Investigators said Ali approached the victim, an adult man with autism, at a bus stop and invited him back to his home to drink alcoholic beverages and watch a movie. A 40-year-old man will spend nearly a decade in prison after being sentenced for assaulting, stabbing, and sexually abusing a woman in Westchester, the District Attorney announced. A Northern Westchester man will spend years behind bars after being caught on a nanny cam taking sexually explicit photos of a child and scarring a family, the DA announced. A group of area lawmakers are up in arms after learning that four registered sex offenders were living next to a nursery school. The issue came to light on Tuesday, Feb. 2, in Orange County when the Town of Newburgh Police Department released a list of Level-2 and Level-3 sex offenders living in the Town of Newburgh. Three sex offenders have moved to addresses in Ulster County this month, according to the Kingston Police Department. Police announced on Tuesday, Oct. 20 that Eric Briglia, 55, moved from Eddyville to 63 Pine St in Kingston. A former teacher in the area will spend time behind bars and register as a sex offender after admitting to rape and other charges involving a teenage student. White Plains resident John Fraioli, 35, pleaded guilty this week to criminal sexual act and rape after assaulting his child victim on more than one occasion last year, Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. announced.
