Longtime Athletic Director, Coach, Former Star Athlete In Region Dies A beloved former coach and athletic director in the Hudson Valley who was a star athlete in high school and college has died after battling cancer for over 15 years. Rockland County resident Charles S. "Chuck" Scarpulla, of Valley Cottage, died on Tuesday, April 11 at age 81. Scarpulla, the former Ramapo High School and Sleepy Hollow High School athletic director and Section 1 football coordinator was known for his coaching skills, but more importantly for listening, caring, and motivating young athletes. Victim Of Fatal House Fire Victim In Region Was Teacher, Former HS Athlete The victim of a fatal house fire that broke out earlier this week in Westchester is being remembered as a popular teacher and former high school athlete. Roberto Eric Pallas was 33.  The fire broke out in the Village of Mamaroneck at around noontime, Sunday, Nov. 7 in the basement at 518 Walnut St. A 2006 graduate of Rye Neck High School, where he played both tennis and basketball, he received a Bachelor’s degree from Hofstra University in 2010.  He had worked in customer service as a supervisor for Tommie Copper in Armonk. Covid-19: NY Delays Start Of HS Winter Sports Season After fall sports in New York were forced to be delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association has now announced that winter sports will also start later. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) COVID-19 Task Force met on Monday, Aug. 31, and determined that the start of winter sports will be moved from Monday, Nov. 16 to Monday, Nov. 30 to give schools and sections more time to complete the fall season. Services Scheduled For Area HS Student-Athlete Killed In Crash Services have been announced for a Pearl River High School student-athlete killed in a horrific multi-vehicle crash. A wake will be held from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, at F. Ruggiero & Sons Funeral Home, 732 Yonkers Ave., Yonkers, for Altin Nezaj, 17, who died during a crash on Sunday, Oct. 13, that also killed another teen and critically injured another.
