Ulster Man Who Killed Friend For 'Talking Trash' Sentenced To Prison A man from the region has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing his best friend by shooting him in the back of the head while he was in the area from California visiting his mother. Ulster County resident Gregory Thayer, age 50, of the town of Ulster was sentenced on Wednesday, Oct. 25 to 25 years for manslaughter and 15 years for criminal possession of a weapon. Both sentences will run concurrently, said the Ulster County District Attorney's Office. Ulster County Man Accused Of Murdering Best Friend An area man has been indicted for allegedly murdering his best friend. Gregory Thayer, age 48, of the Town of Ulster was indicted on Friday, Oct. 15, by an Ulster County grand jury for murder and criminal possession of a weapon, said the District Attorney's Office. Thayer was charged by the Town of Ulster Police Department for the murder of Bruce Swierc on Thursday, Sept. 29.
