Andrew Avila, age 26, pleaded guilty to the charges against him on Tuesday, March 2, according to the Nassau County District Attorney, over a year after the Valentine’s Day death of Rebecca Carlson, age 39.

Avila, who is from Elmont, contacted Carlson through a website, where they agreed to meet in person for a sex act, the DA’s Office said.

In the early morning hours of February 14, 2023, Carlson met Avila in his car in Mineola.

However, the two got into an argument when, according to District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly, Carlson refused Avila’s demands for more.

That’s when Avila strangled the woman to death. He took Carlson’s body and left it by a dumpster behind the Advanced Auto Parts retail store at 1146 Grand Avenue in South Hempstead, where it was discovered the next morning by an employee.

“Carlson was a mother who had tragically fallen on difficult times and met a cruel end because of this defendant’s violent outburst,” Donnelly said. “Her family remains in our thoughts.”

Avila was arrested in Hewlett in March 2023. He was charged with first-degree manslaughter.

At his sentencing on Monday, June 3, he is expected to receive a sentence of 25 years in prison.
