The plea came on Tuesday, May 16 from Terry Smith, aged 60, of Riverhead, the Suffolk County District Attorney announced.

Smith is accused of burglarizing the Lowe’s Home Improvement Store located on Old Country Road in Riverhead on three separate occasions.

On November 10, 2021, Smith walked out of Lowe’s with a shopping cart of unpaid merchandise, which included a spray gun kit, hedge trimmers, and a chainsaw having a value of nearly $3,000, according to the court documents and Smith’s guilty plea.

Then, on November 24, Smith returned to Lowe’s, this time taking power tools up to the register but not paying for them on the way out.

A manager from the store followed Smith and observed this theft.

The next evening, a camera at Lowe’s caught Smith ramming the sliding glass doors with what looked to be a steel beam.

After breaking and entering, Smith stole more power tools. He was later located and arrested.

“These types of crimes have a damaging effect on our economy and local communities,” said District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. “Those caught burglarizing and stealing from businesses, like this defendant, will go to jail.”

Smith pleaded guilty to:

  • Third-degree grand larceny
  • Third-degree burglary

He is due back in court on Wednesday, June 14.
