It happened in Hempstead on Monday, Nov. 13, according to Nassau County Police. At approximately 5:40 a.m., the Devon Road home went up in flames with nine people inside. The Hempstead Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire and evacuate eight people. On Sunday, Nov. 8, around 9 a.m., the earthquake was detected at a magnitude 3.6 centered in Massachusetts off the coast of New Bedford in Buzzard’s Bay, according to the National Earthquake Center. Shockwaves, which don’t appear to have caused much damage, were felt in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, as well as some parts of Connecticut and Long Island. Still, 21 people in New Bedford required assistance from the Red Cross after being displaced by the quake.
