Fire Destroys Garage, Vehicles, Damages Long Island Home, Officials Say
A Long Island woman and her son were saved from a house fire after neighbors woke them up by ringing their doorbell.
The fire took place in Franklin Square around 11 p.m., Wednesday, July 13, on Howard Avenue.
Arriving Franklin Square firefighters were met with a large garage fire with multiple vehicles burning, hazardous materials, and a collapse of the garage, the Franklin Square Fire Department said.
Firefighters had the main body of fire quickly knocked down. Extension into the residence was kept to a minimum, the department added.

A Westchester woman who was known for her work at Ground Zero with the Red Cross and for singing the National Anthem at Major League Baseball games has died.
Marie Menna-Doescher, age 61, of Eastchester, died on Tuesday, May 17, after earlier surviving a 9/11 linked cancer relating to her volunteer work for the Red Cross at Ground Zero, according to her obituary.

Twenty people were displaced on Long Island, as several Suffolk County fire departments teamed to battle a blaze at an apartment complex early on Monday, Dec. 9, fire officials said.
Fire crews responded to the Fairfield Sunrise Gardens complex on Greenbriar Drive in Bohemia shortly after 4:30 a.m. on Monday, where a fire damaged a total of 12 apartments, leaving 20 without a roof over their heads, according to the Red Cross.
