The crash took place around 5:51 p.m., Sunday, May 5, on Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station, according to the Suffolk County Police.

According to police,  the marked police vehicle, which had its lights and sirens activated, was following an ambulance northbound on Walt Whitman Road when a 2018 Volkswagen Passat pulled out of the Walt Whitman Mall parking lot and the two vehicles collided, police said.

 The officer was taken to Nassau University Medical Center. The driver of the Volkswagen was taken to Huntington Hospital and a passenger in the Volkswagen was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, police said.

 All three were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, they added.
