Long Island Man Involved In Crash Drove Drunk With Toddler Aboard, Police Say

A Long Island man has been charged after police say he drove drunk and crashed the vehicle with a toddler inside.

Suffolk County Police arrested Jonathan Bernal Lorenzo, 21, of Medford on Friday, Oct. 25 around 12:30 a.m.

Police say Bernal Lorenzo was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer when he lost control of the vehicle, swerved from the roadway and crashed into a retaining wall and building at 3723 Route 112 in Coram.

The passengers in the vehicle, Mari Cruz Villedea, 20, of Medford and their 16-month-old child, were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Bernal Lorenzo’s vehicle was impounded, police say, and he was taken into custody. Bernal Lorenzo faces the following charges:

  • Driving while intoxicated
  • Aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15 years old or younger (Leandra’s Law)
  • Endangering the welfare of a child

Bernal Lorenzo was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday, Oct. 25.
