There's a new restaurant in Huntington now that Punta Cana Dominican Grill has made its debut.
It is the second Long Island location for the restaurant. The original is located in Westbury. And soon there will a third arm of the eatery. One will open in a couple of months in Rockville Centre, owner Jon Romero told Daily Voice. The Huntington location launched two weeks ago.
Pernil which is a slow-roasted marinated pork Maduros, a dish of fried sweet plantains, headline a robust menu.
"Dominican food is traditionally not spicy but full of flavor and hefty portions. Our proteins are all marinated at least 24 hours before cooking," explained Romero.
"I wanted to bring my culture's experience and cuisine," to Long Island, Romero said.
"I was taught how to cook by my grandmother and mother at a very young age. I’ve worked at restaurants since the age of 13."
He went to C.W. Post for business then dropped out to open his first restaurant.
Describing some menu options, "We have a nice selection of empanadas from traditional Dominican flavors like our seasoned ground beef to more American ones like mac and cheese or Nutella banana," said Romero.
The staff is working on developing a vegan/vegetarian empanada.
"Our most popular dishes so far are Pernil, yellow rice and peas, and Maduros," Romero said.
Other dishes include Chicharron, fried pork belly with a crunchy skin and grilled chicken breast with peppers and onions. Choices of sides range from the plantains to potato salad and bean salad.
A house specialty is the homemade sauces that include a spicy green sauce made with cilantro and serrano pepper base which is spicy to a mild red sauce with vinegar and cayenne pepper base, and there's a pink sauce of ketchup mayo and garlic
Punta Cana Dominican Grill is located at 376 New York Ave. in Huntington.
